Joyah Maharaj

Joyah Maharaj, wife of the late Parmeshwardath "Tarzan" Maharaj passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday November 22, 2015, one day before her 87th birthday.  She leaves behind her bereaved children Leelawatie, Indra, Rajendra, Kumar, Sateesh, Vidya, Satie and Mahindra.   She was also the mother of her late sons Vedanand, Sadanand and Narendra Maharaj. Mrs. Maharaj was the daughter of the late Sereram and Rajpati Maharaj.

She was the sister of the late Pundit Krishna Maharaj, the Dharmacharya of Trinidad and Tobago. As Dharmacharya, Pundit Krishna was the spiritual
leader of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha of Trinidad & Tobago and considered the most revered Hindu pundit on the island regardless of Hindu sect.  She was also predeceased by her brothers the revered Pundit Hardath Maharaj of Trinidad, Dr. Deodath Maharaj of Canada and her sister Samdye.   She is survived by her sisters Dhanmattee, Baylah and Shamatee.

Joyah Maharaj was a woman whose life was a testament to hard work, tenacity, her Hindu faith and the American Dream.  Arriving in the United States in 1971 with little more than her suitcase and the dream of a better life for her children she endured the heartbreak of losing her youngest son to persevere to allow her remaining children to enjoy the fruits of life in America. Guided by her love and wisdom her children and grandchildren would go on to become pharmacists, pharmaceutical representatives, business owners, nurses, lawyers, soldiers and radiology technicians.  Whenever life's challenges seemed insurmountable her children had only to look at her example of hard work and faith and realize that anything was possible as long as "you don't make excuses, work hard and put everything in Bhagavan's hands."  Her influence as the matriarch of the Maharaj family will extend to the 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren who survive her and will forever hear the lessons of the woman who made all their lives possible.

 Death is not the end

Death can never be the end

Death is the road

Life is the traveler

The Soul is the Guide

Funeral Service will be held at Garden State Crematory, 4101 Kennedy Blvd., North Bergen, NJ, 07087, on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at 10 AM.
