Elvira E. Toolen

Elvira E. Toolen of Jersey City passed away at Christ Hospital on December 5, 2016 while surrounded by her loved ones. She was 78.

Born in Panama,  Elvira came to the United States in 1959 and settled into Jersey City where she remained a longtime resident.  Elvira worked to put herself through and graduate from Jersey City State College( NJCU ). She was a hardworking devoted mother who took tremendous pride in her family. She worked as a Social Worker for the Division of Youth and Family Services for many years, retiring in 1996.  Elvira was good and kind and devoted herself to making others' lives better.  She would gladly support, invite and care for those who were going through a difficult patch.  Elvira was a wonderful cook and greatly enjoyed supporting her church community and all the church functions.  Elvira loved all animals, particularly her beloved dog Mia.

Elvira was predeceased by her son  David Toolen and her grandson William W. Toolen.  She is survived by her mother, brother and sister in Panama and her devoted children, Dennis Toolen, William Toolen and his wife Margaret, Bruce Toolen and his wife Marianna, Robert W. Toolen and his wife Elizabeth, Edward C. Armstrong and his wife Maria and Melissa Armstrong; her cherished grandchildren Vanessa, James, Bruce, Michael, Robert, Nicholas, Matthew, Leonard, Caitlin and Karissa and her darling great granddaughters Trinity and Nicoletta.  

Visitation will be at McLaughlin Funeral home on Wednesday from 3-8pm.  Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a graveside service at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City on Thursday at a time to be determined.
