Thomas Gomes

Thomas Gomes of New York City, passed away on August 25, 2017 at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida at the age of 78. He was surrounded by all his children and loved ones.

Thomas was born in Bangladesh, in the Village Sonabazur, to the parents of Anthony and Dominga Gomes. He arrived at the US in 1970. With his brother Lucas Gomes and friend Vijay Bhatt,  they pioneered the Indian Restaurant wave in NYC and established Shalimar Restaurant.

As a career chef, he loved to cook and welcomed all to sit at his table to dine.  He had a good sense of humor and loved the simple things in life. He only knew to do his best. He was loved. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his four children Theresa, Peter, Dominga, and Daniel; son and daughter in-laws Edward and Ya-Ching; grandchildren Matthew, Ethan, Peter, and Chloe; great-grandchildren Sky Amber, and Matthew Jr.; loving nephews Anthony, Paul; loving nieces Alice, Anastasia, Catherine and many others. He has a whole host of loving relatives that will miss him dearly.

He is now at peace with our mother Martha; his parents Anthony and Dominga; step-mother Zita; his siblings Agnus, Lucas and wife Christina, Lucy and husband Francis.

Visitation will be at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City, NJ on Friday, September 1, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Relatives and friends are invited to assemble at the funeral home on Saturday at 9:30 am, prior to the funeral mass which will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 3026 Kennedy Boulevard, Jersey City, NJ at 11:00am.  Interment will follow at Rosemount Memorial Park in Elizabeth, NJ.
