Dennis J. Overend

Dennis J. Overend passed away at his home on Thursday, March 3, 2016.

Dennis was the son of Teresa (nee Caiazzo)and Master Sergeant James Overend, who was killed in action in Korea, three weeks prior to the birth of his only child, Dennis.   A true character of Jersey City, Dennis was a lifelong Newark Avenue resident and proud graduate of St. Joseph’s Grammar School class of 1965 and Dickinson High School -1969.   Dennis was a lifelong communicant of Saint Joseph’s Church, head usher of the 7:30am mass and deeply devoted to St. Anthony of Padua.

Dennis had a deep love of the music of his generation and of Jazz and enjoyed frequenting the Jazz clubs of Manhattan.  He was proud to have lived during a time of extraordinary change in both Jersey City and the world and relished that he was able to experience so many events in history.  He traveled the world extensively, enjoying amazing trips throughout Europe and Australia.  He had a natural curiosity for the world around him which he fed through his many explorations abroad.  As he recently contemplated his own impending passing he reflected upon his life saying  ” Other people followed the rules but I followed the wind.”

Dennis was predeceased by his companion of 25 years, Laura Petersen who predeceased him on January 11, 2016.  He leaves behind a loving family of cousins who will sorely miss his presence in their lives.

Visitation will be at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City, NJ on Sunday from 3:00pm-8:00pm.  Relatives and friends are invited to assemble at the funeral home on Monday, March 7, 2016 at 9:30am prior to the funeral mass at St. Joseph’s Church at 10:30am.  Interment follows at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.

Goodbye ole friend, splendid memories abound. Most recently our journey to B.B. king's led me to believe we'd be going out together. 6th Avenue at 35 mph with a white-knuckled grip reminded me of why I've loved your rascally ass for so many decades. You were there when others just talked, Laura and you were splendid together and I will always recall with great joy our lives and laughter. Will never forget you being the first to express that we all live in the time of the greatest rock and roll. You and I sure did see some historic stuff, from PNC to B.B. King's. Your warmth and loving personality was jagged but sincere, you will be missed my friend.
