Janina Kostiw

Janina Kostiw of Jersey City passed away on Friday, January 22, 2016 while surrounded by her loving family.  She was 89 years of age. 

Born in Poland, Janina moved with her family to Brazil where she remained until moving to the United States and settling in Jersey City with her husband and children in 1967.  She worked for 27 years in the Woolworth Building as an office custodian. Janina was an accomplished cook with culinary talents that were legendary. Former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was treated to a meal prepared by Janina in the 1980’s.    Her love of good food was passed on to her children and led to Babunya’s Gourmet Spice, manufactured by her family with her face immortalized on the packaging.  The name was derived from her grandchildren’s name for her “Baba” short for the Ukrainian name ”Babunya “meaning Grandma.  Janina was a devoted parishioner of both St. John the Baptist and Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church in Jersey City.

Janina was predeceased by her beloved husband Thomasz Kostiw,  She is survived by  her children, Paul Kostiw  and his wife Leila, Maria Poisler  and her husband, Oscar and Thomas Kostiw  and his wife Marlen; grandchildren, Marco Poisler and wife Joyce,  Karolyn Telyczka  and her husband Roman,  Michael Poisler ,Roger Kostiw and his wife Nicolette,  Patricia Kostiw,  Esme and Janine Kostiw; great grandchildren, Alexis, Roman and  Matthew Telyczka,  Mark and Christopher Poisler and Eli Kostiw and her sisters, Genoefa Zmuda and Estefani Zwarnieski,  both of Brazil.

Visitation will be at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City on Friday from 4:00pm-8:00pm.  Parastas will be at 5:00pm.  Relatives and friends may assemble at the funeral home on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 9am prior to the funeral mass which will be celebrated at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 30 Bentley Ave. Jersey City at 10am.  Entombment follows at Holy Cross Mausoleum, North Arlington.

In lieu of flowers donations to Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church will be greatly appreciated.
