Marcela R. Rivera

Marcella, R. Rivera, DDS (nee Rodriguez) of New York City, formerly of Jersey City passed away at New York Beth Israel Hospital while surrounded by her family on Friday, January  1, 2016.  She was 81.

Born in Baguio, Philippines, Marcela came to the United States in 1973 and settled in Jersey City.   A dentist, Marcela graduated first in her dental school class at the University of Philippines and was the top scorer on the Dental Board exams.  She worked at the Medical and Dental Department of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson until retiring in 1997.

The true matriarch of her family, she dedicated herself to caring for her family and truly enjoyed cooking for them.  She was a member of the Jesus and Mary Prayer Group of Jersey City and a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.

Marcela is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Jose R. Rivera, Jr.; daughter, Jo-Anne Rothschild and her husband Andrew; sons Michael Rivera and his wife Liza Pascal and Joel Rivera; brothers, Alejandro and Celso Rodriguez; grandchildren, Sydney, Maxime, Luna and Xavi and many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to mention.

Visitation will be held at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City, NJ on Saturday, January 2, 2016 only from 2:00pm to 7:00pm. There will be a prayer service at the funeral home at 5pm. Cremation will be private.

Auntie Marcy, we will miss you greatly. You were kind, witty, and funny. We will never forget the times when you used to give clothes to our daughter. Dear Lola Marcy, I am very sorry that I could not be with you today. I want to tell let you know that you have been on my mind as I have been traveling the world. Your wanderlust has been truly inspiring and your sense of adventure was infectious. Thank you for all you have done to raise and care for your family.
