John Gdovin, Jr.

John Gdovin, Jr. passed away early Thursday evening, October 13, 2016.  Born in Germany, John immigrated to the United States with his parents and settled in Jersey City.  After graduating from Dickinson High School, John served his country in the United States Air Force.  Upon his return from service John further served his community as a Jersey City Police Officer for 26 years.  Well known for his professional demeanor, positive attitude and attention to detail, Officer Gdovin was a welcomed addition to his East District family.  He received many commendations as a result of his commitment to his "brothers in blue" and his city.  A music aficionado and movie watcher, John was a big fan of Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen.  

John is survived by his sons John Gdovin and Jonathan Norcia and grandson Jonathan Jr. He was predeceased by his father John and is survived by his mother, Helen Gdovin, brother George and his wife Dorothy and their children George, James and Tyler and by his sister Janet El-Maraghy and her husband Jimmy and their son John.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Viewing will be at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. Relatives and friends are invited to assemble at McLaughlin Funeral Home on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 9:30am prior to the funeral service at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 85 Wayne Street, Jersey City at 11:00am.  Interment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick, NJ.

Dear Janet and Family: I am so sorry for your loss. It was a terrible shock to me and my family. I am sorry that his sons, John Gdovin,Jr. and Jonathan Norcia lost their Father and that Jonathan Jr. lost his Big Papa. I know that John was a good Father and a good Papa. it was nice to have a great grandpa, he was there for me any time I needed him, I hurt my finger he drove to Bayonne to help me, no other kid can have a great and special grandpa like mine. He gave me love, I am going to miss you rest in peace.
