James A. McLaughlin, Jr.

James Aloysius McLaughlin, Jr. of Jersey City and Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2017.  He was 80.
A graduate of Saint Peter’s Prep and the University of Notre Dame, Jim was the owner and operator of McLaughlin Funeral Home in Jersey City.  While at Notre Dame, he was introduced to Mary Ellen Waldron, the two fell in love and married on May 21, 1960.
A true native son of Jersey City, Jim was devoted to the city he loved so well and exemplified a life dedicated to public service.    In addition to being a Councilman in Ward B of Jersey City, he served as a Trustee and President of Boys and Girls Clubs of Hudson County, Chair of Saint Peter’s College Board of Regents, Commissioner and Chair of Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, Trustee of Saint Peter’s Prep, Commissioner of Jersey City Parking Authority, Chair of Hudson County Economic Development Corporation, Board Member of North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, Member of Hudson Legal Ethics Committee, Trustee of Liberty HealthCare and Chairman of Jersey City Medical Center, where he spearheaded the building of the new Medical Center located on Grand Street.
Even though Jim gave so much of himself to the city he loved, his greatest achievement was his family.  He loved and adored his wife Mary Ellen, his four daughters and his 11 grandchildren above all else, delighting in their successes and happiness.  He will be missed by all.
Jim was predeceased by his beautiful bride Mary Ellen.  He is survived by his daughters, Maureen Byrne, Claire Juliana, Megan Becht and Maryellen McLaughlin; sons-in-law Tom Byrne, David Juliana, Dan Becht and Sean Flannery; grandchildren, Daniel, Conor, Tyler, Ryan, Fiona, Kiersten, Emma, Maeve, Gabriella, Camille and Jack; sisters, Jane Dalton and Nancy Buckman and her husband James Buckman and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins, all of whom he loved.

Visitation will be at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City, NJ on Tuesday, and Wednesday from 5:00- 8:00pm.  Relatives and friends may assemble at the funeral home on Thursday October 12, 2017 at  10AM prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Aloysius Church, 691 West Side Avenue, Jersey City at 11:00AM.  Interment follows at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Jersey City Medical Center Foundation, 265 Grand Street, Jersey City, NJ  07302 or Saint Peter’s Prep 144 Grand Street, Jersey City, 07302 would be appreciated.

Dear McLaughlin family, What sad news to learn of Jim's death. He and your mom were great friends through NSM, and some 5 years ago your dad stopped to visit me in Durham while on a golf trip. I was so honored. Jim was among our best and brightest in funeral service, to say nothing of such stellar dedication to his community. He was a gentleman with courtly manners, a "regular guy" and God knows, FUNNY as they come! All of us who admired Jimmy are better and richer in spirit through his sterling example as a man of family, faith and character. Thanks be to God for the life and gift of Jim McLaughlin, now rejoined with sweet Mary Ellen.....within the gentle embrace of the Good Shepherd. Grace and peace be unto you, his dear family. To the McLaughlin family from the Coyle family our prayers and thoughts are with you. Almost all of my family, from my father in 1956 to my Mom in 2011 have been waked in Mclaughlin Funeral home. James always treated us as family and made tough times go smoothly. He was a great man and will be deeply missed.

Jim was a natural leader who made his mark in Jersey City in so many ways. His volunteer work to enhance the healthcare for all in Jersey City led to a the Development and Construction new Hospital : The Jersey City Medical Center in which the Board Room is dedicated in honor of his service. He left Jersey City better than he found it. The true mark of a successful life. My condolences to the entire family for your loss.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of mr. McLaughlin. In these times, comfor is much needed. Revelations 21:4 states: And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away". What a wonderful hope for the future that will be- no more death and pain will occur. I hope that you and your family are comforted by what the Bible promises. My condolences are with you and your family at this time
